As we work our way through a variety of web 2.0 tools I hope that you are beginning to see a use for these tools in your life to create your personal learning network (PLN). While there may be multiple other tools we could use, the point of any of them is in their ability to allow you to connect and learn with others in a global society. For me, it's about using the tools to fuel my passion. . .
I will introduce one or two tools this evening but the majority of the class will be discussing Dan Pink and the concept of communities of practice. My hope is that everyone will have at least two posts on her/his blog from last week's assignment. Once we get everyone's homework on their blog, you will be reading and commenting on each other's work. The goal is to show you how to use the Internet to allow students to publish their work and share with a wider audience than just the teacher, as well as receive feedback from both peers and, hopefully, a larger audience.
I do believe it is also Valentine's Day, I expect we can get our work completed fairly quickly and let you go celebrate this occasion in proper fashion.
This Week's Question: What is your current favorite or past favorite teacher movie and why?
Lean on me!
ReplyDeleteWhy?
DeleteEastside High reminds me of the middle and high school that I attended in San Ysidro in terms of having a large population of high risk students - gang members, broken families, teenage parents, violence, etc. This movie embodies the idea that the life you have doesn't have to be the only life you lead. And Morgan Freedman's character --- loved it, especially the inspirational speech!

Most recently Argo, it helped me interest students in Middle Eastern History
ReplyDeleteI love the movie October Sky. It is a great example of how a teacher can use their students' interests to help them become independent learners and creative problem solvers.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite teacher movie is "Good Will Hunting." To me, it is a Cinderella story of education. It is the story of a young man (played by Matt Damon) who is looked down upon by the students in the school (i.e. wicked step sisters) where he works as a janitor and assumed he is not smart because he is a "janitor". Will leaves his "glass slipper" anonymously when he solves a Math challenge formula on a blackboard placed in the school's corridor (i.e. The Ball). When the professor who created the math challenge (played by Robin Williams) discovers the math problem has been solved, he begins a search for the mysterious student, and upon finding Will takes him under his wing. As a future educator, I believe that we must always strive to "never judge a book by its cover" in our students. Moreover, we should endeavor and seek to assist all students by recognizing and challenging their abilities by disarming their fear of learning. We need to help them develop greater confidence in themselves and empower them to believe in themselves and become life long learners.

ReplyDeleteCoaching movies inspire me more. Not a particular one at the moment. I like the rallying of the team to accomplish a common goal. I also think the the relationships coaches build with their players and the time they take to make the team the best they can inspire me.
ReplyDeleteCould you at least list one?
DeleteHas to be Dead Poets Society. Emotionally evocative as well as inspiring and reminds us to try and ignite our students interest in learning. Makes me remember what I love about teaching (although tearing pages out of books does break my heart a little...) :)
ReplyDeleteMona Lisa's Smile- I love that the teacher was a radical of her time. She motivated women to continue their education and break the norm. And of course because I love Julia Roberts.
ReplyDeleteI would have to say Freedom Writers and Stand and Deliver. I just like how motivating the teachers are and how they dont give up given their tough situations.
ReplyDeleteWhat gets me up in the morning is the unknown events of the day. I'm not talking about what time the students are learning math and reading, but instead what interactions between students will occur as well as how I respond to situations that arise. As a new teacher, almost every situation is new and I love the spontaneity of how to handle different situations that come up..
ReplyDeleteI am going to agree with Jasmine. I love Mona Lisa Smile, the passion she had for her job and towards her students... and any movie with Julia Roberts :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite teacher movie is Matilda. Many of my students don't come from great home situations and I feel like school to them is their second home and it needs to be a place not only for learning but a place to feel safe, wanted, and respected. Just like Ms. Honey, I strive to have empathy for each and every one of my students in my classroom. :)
